Farah Khan: Farmington Hills City Council Candidate

In this episode of I Can See Clearly Now, I spoke with Farah Khan, a candidate for Farmington Hills City Council. This conversation is part of a series designed to give residents an opportunity to hear directly from candidates about their motivations, priorities, and understanding of how local government functions in practice.

Farah described Farmington Hills as a community that has been central to her life for many years. Although she has lived in the city for over a decade, her involvement predates that residency through civic engagement and participation in local meetings. She framed her decision to run as emerging from a belief that the city is at a critical moment and needs leadership that listens closely to residents.

“Farmington Hills is at a critical point, turning point.”

She emphasized that her motivation comes from direct interaction with residents and from her work on the Farmington Hills Health Commission, where she has focused on translating community concerns into actionable steps. Rather than positioning herself as a career politician, Farah described herself as a parent, neighbor, and community member seeking to bring lived experience into city decision making.

Campaign finance was another topic we addressed. Farah explained that she entered the race without a predefined budget and that her fundraising efforts have focused on family, friends, and individual community members rather than institutional or corporate sources.

“I did not set any budget.”

We also discussed her decision to affiliate with the Green Party, even though City Council races in Farmington Hills are nonpartisan. Farah framed this choice as values-driven, rooted in dissatisfaction with the dominant two-party system and a desire to support policies she believes align with community well-being and ethical governance.

“Their values, they resonate with mine.”

A significant portion of our conversation focused on senior services, particularly the future of the Costick Center. Farah expressed strong support for rebuilding or substantially improving the existing senior facility, arguing that seniors are an integral part of the community and that their preferences should guide decision making.

“We should come up with a plan to actually rebuild it and make it the way they want it.”

Beyond specific policy areas, Farah repeatedly returned to themes of transparency and connection. She described transparency not simply as public meetings or posted documents, but as helping residents understand why decisions are made and creating more informal opportunities for dialogue, such as neighborhood conversations and town halls.

This episode of I Can See Clearly Now offers voters insight into how one City Council candidate views community engagement, coalition building, and resident-centered governance. The purpose is not endorsement, but clarity, so residents of Farmington Hills can evaluate candidates based on their stated values and priorities.
