In this episode of I Can See Clearly Now, I spoke with Jimmy Allicia, a candidate for mayor of Farmington Hills, Michigan. This conversation was part of an ongoing series designed to help residents hear directly from candidates about their motivations, priorities, and understanding of the limits and responsibilities of local office.
Jimmy entered the race as an independent candidate, describing his decision as a response to concerns he has heard repeatedly from residents. Early in our discussion, he emphasized what he sees as a disconnect between city government and segments of the community, particularly renters and seniors living in large apartment complexes.

A significant portion of our conversation focused on housing conditions and affordability. Jimmy described deteriorating rental properties owned by large corporate landlords and expressed concern about rising rents and maintenance issues. He framed these problems as both quality-of-life issues and economic issues that affect the broader community.
We also discussed campaign finance and partisanship. Jimmy explained that his campaign is largely self-funded and that he has chosen not to accept corporate donations. He described his candidacy as independent of political parties and emphasized voting based on individuals rather than party affiliation.
“I came in as an independent because I don’t vote for a party, I vote for the individuals.”

Senior services emerged as another major topic, particularly the future of the Kostek Center. Jimmy said he spoke directly with staff and seniors to understand their preferences and emphasized listening to those who use the facility when making decisions about its future.
“It’s a senior facility. You should listen to what the people are asking for.”

We also addressed the limited formal authority of the mayor in Farmington Hills. Jimmy acknowledged that the position carries only one vote on City Council and requires collaboration with other council members to advance any initiative. He described public engagement and transparency as tools he would use to build support.
Toward the end of our conversation, Jimmy spoke candidly about his personal history, including past mistakes and the impact those experiences had on his outlook. He described accountability and growth as central to how he approaches public life today.
“If I’m not different than what I was 30 years ago, then I wasted 30 years of my life.”
